How To Get Out Of Paying Rent
As a property manager of a few rental homes in the Atlanta area for the past 20 years, I think I have heard every possible excuse imaginable, to avoid paying rent to landlords.
I have begged and pleaded with tenants to pay, and to pay on time. I have been frustrated with managing property, exhausted from their excuses. I have heard them all. I have listened to people tell me their grandparents have died and they could’nt pay, their parents have passed away and they could’nt pay, their dogs and cats have died, and they couldn’t pay.
I think after 20 years I have seen it all. I have watched property returned with living dogs and cats left behind. I have watched brand new carpets infested with fleas, from tenants who denied having any pets. I had to wonder, did they have the fleas? I got one property back, the property was so infested, that I gave my indoor cat the fleas!
I have rented to dancers who were strippers, cash paying customers who were drug dealers, and firemen who were pyromaniacs.
I have rented property to Blacks living next door to Whites with Confederate flags proudly displayed in the yard. I have rented property to Blacks who complained of living in the ghetto, in white middle class suburbs.
It’s a wonder that I have done this for so long.
I suppose I could write this story for all of the landlords out there. I have no doubt that I could teach quite a bit. I would teach about getting applications and verifying them. I would teach about renting to people who have jobs and taking the time to verify that they had jobs. I could teach so much. After all, 20 years has taught me so much.
Of course it’s not not my nature to look at the usual, the ordinary. All of that would be boring and redundent and already out there. So I have decided to do something different. I decided to write an article to help the tenant get out of paying rent.
I am not a lawyer, so I can’t tell you it will be legally bound. I am a social worker who manages rental property, and helps people process life’s pressing problem, through teddy bears. It’s just that after 20 years I have gained an expertise in leasing property. I know what works, and what doesn’t, and I know what you can do and say to get out of paying rent! Want to learn more?
